Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children Review

Synopsis:
Two years have passed since Cloud and friends defeated Sephiroth. A mysterious disease called the "Geostigma" is spreading, and a trio of violent fanatics who claim to be Jenova's sons are hell-bent on finding what's left of her. Cloud and company have to join forces once more in order to save the world.

Review:
I know. The plot synopsis I wrote above might as well be in an alien language for one who has absolutely no clue about the Final Fantasy VII video game that preceded Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. But that's the sad part -- Advent Children was created as a conclusion for FFVII, thus it can never be fully appreciated by one who has never played the game.

I played Final Fantasy VII many years ago, when I was still single and living in my dad's house. I'm now married with two children and so you can just imagine how long ago that was. I still know my party members -- Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, Barret, Vincent, Yuffie, Cid, and Red XII, but the other characters? With the exception of Jenova and Sephiroth, my mind was a complete blank. In terms of game events, the only thing I remember vividly is Aeris' death. Since I don't have the time nor inclination to replay FFVII, a chunk of the film's plot connections with the game was lost on me. Of course that's probably what the FFVII Digest included in the DVD release is for, but any gamer will attest that nothing can replace the experience of actually beating the game before watching the movie.

But that's the beauty of Advent Children. It's so straightforward and spectacular that one can get blown away purely because of the visuals. As I've said earlier, two years have passed since Cloud and friends defeated Sephiroth. A band of silver-haired and green-eyed Jenova fanatics led by a guy named Kadaj has emerged. They will do anything to retrieve Jenova's head and whatever materia (gem-like spheres with powers) they can get their hands on in order to bring about the "reunion" (a.k.a. the resurrection of Sephiroth). Cloud returns to Tifa after wandering around by himself, and one by one his old comrades show up in order to help him stop Kadaj and company. It's a very simple RPG-esque plot, but it's the journey that makes the movie. Eye-popping action sequences take up about 80% of screentime. Just about everyone is given the chance to show off their awesome fighting moves, weapons, and limit breaks. I was totally immersed in Advent Children, which is really all about Cloud finding himself behind the context of saving the world.

Advent Children's art and animation surpass all the Final Fantasy games' visuals that precede it. The character designs remain faithful to the game's, only this time the blocky 3D renditions are replaced with very realistic models that could very well pass for human at a glance. The texture of the skin, the luminosity of the eyes, the movement of the hair... it's all too perfect. You won't be able to take your eyes off them especially when they start to fight. The furious yet impossibly smooth action sequences are just too mesmerizing. You can spend the next hour just watching these guys (and gals) take on each other. The settings and locales such as mountains, forests, and cityscapes are also as superbly detailed as the characters.

I must admit, I felt a bit cheated after watching Advent Children. My memory of the game is no longer what it was, and I felt I was not able to get the full effect that was intended by the creators. It is, however, undeniably a visual feast that's worth treating yourself to player or not. Just watch it. Go oooh and aaah over it. After all, this is what a real Final Fantasy film is (not the totally un-Final Fantasy The Spirits Within).

What is D. Gray-Man?

The plot revolves around Allen Walker, an exorcist, in the midst of an imaginary 19th century Europe. Allen is a member of the Dark Religious Organization, which contains exorcists, connected with Vatican. The mission of the Dark Religious Organization is to stop The Millennium Earl, an evil demon-like entity intending to cleanse the world by destroying all the human in it in the manner of Noah's great flood.

The exorcists themselves are special people gifted with compatibility with Innocence, divine substance created in the ages past to combat the Earl's minions, the Akumas. It is said that there are exactly 109 units of Innocence scattered around the world. Once an Innocence finds its compatible person, it will evolve to become a weapon to fight the Akumas.

As the story goes, Allen Walker is introduced with more Exorcist characters, among them are Kanda Yuu, Linali Li and Rabi. Also in the spotlight are Komui Li, the church's science department supervisor and older brother of Linali Li, Bookman, a mysterious colleague within the church, and Cross Marian, a general in the Organization and Allen's master.

More villains also appear along the way. There are higher level akumas, with greater power, skill and wit. Newly appearing as of this article is the Noah's family, humans gifted with great power allied with the Earl.

Synopsis

While doing a regular clean-up of Hollows, Ichigo and Rukia meet a rouge Shinigami named Shenna. Shenna is being threatened by a supernatural group of terrorists called The Dark Ones, and Ichigo becomes emotionally involved in rescuing yet another damsel in distress.

I'll be straight with you, Dear Reader. I went into Bleach: Memories of Nobody expecting it to fail. This was probably because I had a conversation with another fan just yesterday about the show, and he pointed out several weaknesses I never saw or considered in my original review. And these weren't small, nitpicky things either, but gaping weaknesses that can kill the show's suspense and entertainment value. It felt funny, watching so many holes get shot into one of my favorite shows. These were things I thought I should have seen myself, but had somehow either ignored or missed. "Maybe," I thought, "maybe it's nowhere near as good as I thought it was." And whether that holds true for the series, I won't know until the inevitable rewrite as I've started buying DVDs by the season. But as for the movie itself, I am happy to report that this fan was pleased with how Memories of Nobody turned out. It was pleasant surprise. In the tradition of other Studio Peirrot movies like Urusei Yatsura: Only You and InuYasha: Affections Touching Time, this movie was made simply to please fans, and it makes that goal with professional ease.

After an incoherent opening sequence that was supposed to pique curiosity, but only inspired only confusion, we find ourselves in a familiar situation. A young nameless, anonymous plot device- er, I mean spirit girl- is running from a Hollow. And chasing that Hollow is Ichigo and Rukia, on what I assume is a breezy autumn Saturday because it looks they have nothing much better to do than, you know, save the world. Kids these days.


And Rukia, that skirt makes you look fat.

Anyway, after killing the Hollow and sending the girl to the Soul Society, there is a cute sequence where Rukia chastises Ichigo for carelessly leaving his physical body behind while his spirit goes to fight the Hollow. "I'm sick of you tossing your body all over the place and leaving me to take care of it," she says. It's a nudge and a wink to the fans of the show, and it's effectively funny. After that gag though, the wheels of the plot start going round and round when they meet this girl:

Her name is Shenna. She is a rogue Soul Reaper with no memory of what unit she is in or when she came to Earth. She likes ribbons in her hair, riding Ferris Wheels, and teasing Ichigo as the movie moves along. For me, she is the reason this movie worked as well as it did. She is a sweet character who is likeable from pretty much frame one, and nothing is done to change that. The Dark Ones, the prerequisite villains of the movie, have taken an interest in her and those ghost things you see surrounding her in the above picture. It soon becomes paramount to the survival of both the Real World and the Soul Society that she be protected. Ichigo is naturally the man for the job, but to do it he must slice through both The Dark Ones and Soul Society red tape.

There are notable weaknesses of this movie, mostly having to do with not making any sense or having only the vaguest sense of reality. Writing them up individually, though, feels nitpicky, and I get the sense that people who really want their movies to make sense probably wouldn't be watching anything like Bleach. I doubt they'd be watching much anime, either. The animation for the movie is up to par with the normal standards of a feature-length movie. It's probably nothing to write home about, but there were a couple of scenes that dazzled my eyes, especially after watching the more washed out Ajumi ~Beach Story~. The plot moves along steadily without feeling too forced or artificial. And while most of the characters from the series make an appearance, this is not a reunion movie. Orihime, Chad and the rest of Ichigo's posse fade to the background and only make cameos. This was a wise move, since there's only room for so much in the movie. Ichigo and Shenna are the focus here, and nothing is done to stray from that.

The music gets its own paragraph. Props to the music director, or whatever the job is called, for the score in this one. While it's not worth buying a soundtrack for, it does an excellent job of complimenting the movie without melodrama. While there is yet another remix of "Number One" in the opening using guitar riffs that sound suspiciously like Michael Jackson's "Beat It," the rest of the music is very eclectic, using screeching violins during one fight scene, moody opera while visiting a carnival of souls, and a haunting MIDI sequence when things get really bad for our heroes. It takes skill to make a soundtrack that compliments the action as well as the one found here.




Three stars can mean just about anything, which is why I suggest that anytime you see us rate something three stars that looks interesting to you, you'd best read the review, like you're doing now. Or at least scan it. I've seen a three star rating mean, "An average show, nothing to get excited about," "a good show that's worth watching," "a show so close to four stars it hurts me that we can't award three and a half," and "an entertaining anime if you like its subject matter." So, for clarification purposes, here is exactly what I mean by three stars.

Full Metal Alchemist Anime Review

There are just a handful of times when an animated television series lives up to what the medium can do. Cowboy Bebop did it. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex did it. Macross did it. And though there are more, suffice it to say that another title should be added to these ranks: Fullmetal Alchemist. In its 51 episodes, we get humor, drama, horror, and pathos packaged together in a lovely combination that, while not for children despite its look, is among the best anime series ever created.

Edward and Alphonse Elric aren't exactly your typical brothers. The older Ed, a short fellow who's constantly picked on for his height, is missing an arm and a leg; the younger Al appears for all the world to be a suit of armor. On top of their odd appearance, they are alchemists par excellence. In their world, the law of equivalent exchange rules, and alchemists can use the materials around them to manipulate their environment. There's only one rule to alchemy: the dead cannot be brought back to life.

In a desperate attempt to break that rule, the brothers lost body and limbs to the void, and they are determined to get them back. How? They seek the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary gem that can supposedly get around the truth of equivalent exchange and could restore their original forms. But to find the stone, they will have to become a part of the military establishment...something that Edward takes as a necessary evil. As they take on strange homunculi and other alchemists determined to have the stone for themselves, they will discover the dark secrets of alchemy that will forever alter their lives and the lives of those they love.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a tasty package from start to finish. Though it is not as gorgeous, perhaps, as the very cream of the televised crop of anime, it always looks perfect for what it is supposed to be. Because the character designs are not hyper-realistic and the humor often exaggerates those designs, expecting it to look like Ghost in the Shell misses the point. The opening songs are loud and boisterous rock tunes that set the show's tone; I can't say the closing songs ever impressed me, but I'm not a fan of girly J-Pop. Though the score is not a standout, it effectively underscores the proceedings.

But what makes Fullmetal Alchemist a dramatic powerhouse is its ability to run the gambit of emotions in a single episode. There are often a few goofy moments in each segment, but they never feel out of place. When the time is right, though, the story can turn serious in an instant. The fact that Fullmetal Alchemist can pull off hysterical comedy and tragic pathos in a half-hour is astounding. Although it's often funny, this is not a program for children. Despite the cheerful tone, this sucker has dark, dark themes throughout, and it has some graphic violence that, when used for effect, hits like a prizefighter. Though the kids will have to wait for it, the concepts discussed are deeply moral and ethical, which makes the show even more powerful. Not only does Fullmetal Alchemist raise personal questions - for example, what lengths you would go to in order that a loved one might return from the dead - but it covers topics ranging from familial loyalty and military principles to religion, racism, and genocide. The humorous bits actually work to make the philosophical underpinnings palatable: I came in for a good story, laughed often, and got a lot more besides.

Fullmetal Alchemist starts out deceptively simple. At first, it appears that the audience is in for a simple journeyman show. However, over the course of the two seasons, the complexity of the whole becomes apparent. There are few chance meetings in this world; indeed, characters who show up in early episodes as part of episodic adventures often reappear in the concluding third of the series. At first, this seems confusing as characters the audience met twenty episodes back suddenly return; however, it adds a huge dimension of rewatchability as the pieces fit into place upon review. The layered nuances of Fullmetal Alchemist make it a joy to watch.

But you know what I like best about the show? The interplay between Edward and Al. The dub is absolutely superb, even better than the Japanese track, and through it I genuinely felt for these two throughout the show. In casting 12-year-old Aaron Dismuke for the role of Al, the crew made a brilliant choice. He brings the perfect feel of someone on the cusp of adolescence to the role, and he's utterly believable as a boy trapped in a suit of armor wanting just to be a happy youngster again. Meanwhile, veteran Vic Mignogna as Ed captures the fire of the determined yet hardened young man who has seen too much for his years. Although the original animation goes a long way to establishing the relationship between the two brothers, the English voice actors take it up a notch. And when things slow down a little after episode 26, which is the start of the second season of episodes, it's these two that kept me interested.

I also have to admit that the ending of the show is amazing. Over the course of three busy days, I watched the last 14 episodes, it was just that good. Although there is that little blip I mentioned that wasn't quite as engaging, the last section is rock solid. The only problem I would mention, and it's minor, is that the show does not end with episode 51. Although some plot threads are complete, the show finishes on what I can only call an interlude cliffhanger - no one is in real danger, but there are HUGE things to be resolved. The Fullmetal Alchemist movie, due out in the fall of 2006 in the U.S., will hopefully conclude things well. (Although it's available now illegally via Bit Torrent sources, I am showing restraint and willpower and waiting for FUNimation to get this film out...NOW.)

There's little else I can say about Fullmetal Alchemist other than wow. Though it is a cliché to say, it is an instant classic you will not regret adding to your collection if you appreciate great storytelling, compelling characters, and rich ethical discussion put together in an entertaining package.

Air Gear Anime Review

Is rollerblading really an interesting enough sport to make a story out of? Apparently, manga creator Oh Great! thinks so, as his manga of Air Gear has been going on for at least thirteen volumes or so with more to come. Of course, Air Gear isn't about just plain old roller skating but Air Treks, decked out skates with motors and gadgets and such that make using them into an extreme sport. All things considered, we've seen sports anime made from far worse conceits, and Air Gear has a great soundtrack and reasonable good animation to go with it. But sadly, Air Gear Vol. 1 shows that a lack of character development, clichéd plots, and uncomfortable sexual innuendo can take down an otherwise promising show very quickly.

Ikki is a tough guy who lives with the easy-on-the-eyes Noyamano sisters. He can handle himself in a fight, but what happens when the guys you are fighting have Air Treks? These stylish rollerblades allow a skilled user to virtually take flight in all sorts of acrobatic moves. A youth gang subculture has grown up around Air Treks, and when Ikki finds out about it, he is intrigued. Of course, it turns out that Ikki has surprising Air Trek skills from the get-go; he's a born natural. He quickly gets engaged in the world of gang competitions only to find out that the four Noyamanos are themselves an Air Trek team! But lest my readers think the show is all about skating, there's a love triangle building between Ikki, the mysterious and flirtateous Simco, and Ringo, the Noyamano sister who's fallen head over heels for him. Now isn't that sweet?

As you might have guessed from the description above, Air Gear Vol. 1 follows every shonen stereotype ever seen. That isn't to say that it isn't enjoyable at times. The first episode in particular shows some promise with some genuinely unexpected humor and a playful nature. With the admittedly entertaining music pumping in the background, I thought that despite its trappings, it might be a worthwhile show. But each episode just sinks deeper and deeper into tedium. I have to admit that I finally used the fast-forward button during the last half of the fourth episode. I could tell each move the show was going to make. Why bother watching when you could write the show yourself?

There are two big problems with Air Gear Vol. 1 that go beyond its unoriginal plot. The first is the lack of character development. Ikki isn't a really nice guy, and while brash young hotheads are a staple of the shonen genre, he is almost totally unrelatable. We don't know why he lives with the Noyamanos; we have no idea about his family or his background. He is a cypher standing in for a real person. I don't care if he's going to become an Air Trek master because he is a nobody, a nothing. The love triangle aspect makes this all the more clear. Why would anybody be interested in this guy? Because he's a mystery? Ikki as the lead of the show just isn't interesting enough.

Then there's the issue of the fanservice and sexual innuendo. While I might not appreciate a lot of fanservice in my shows, I understand its allure. Air Gear is certainly not, say, Agent Aika; while some flesh is shown, it's not constant. But what was disturbing to me was that there were lots of innuendos and fanservice all centered around 14-year-old girls. I know that for some this might just be a selling point. For me, it was simply wrong, and even if the plot of Air Gear had been more solid, it still would have bothered me. Do we really need underage seduction in our entertainment?

While the first episode of Air Gear isn't bad, the following three episodes descend into junk. If you must buy an Air Gear product, then I really would suggest the soundtrack album; the music I enjoyed. But if you've been watching anime for more than a few weeks, you've seen this show done better with less garbage and more style.
